The Leapfrog Group Patient Safety Initiative is a voluntary program aimed at mobilizing employer purchasing power to drive improvements to safety and quality in America’s health care system. Among other initiatives, The Leapfrog Group works with its employer members to encourage transparency and easy access to health care information as well as rewards for hospitals that have a proven record of high quality care.

Some of Leapfrog’s most recognized work includes the creation of the Leapfrog Hospital Survey, a voluntary survey that looks exclusively at patient safety, and, subsequently, the roll out of the Leapfrog Hospital Safety Score – a meaningful and easy-to-use patient safety rating for hospitals.

The New Jersey Health Care Quality Institute is Leapfrog’s Regional Leader for New Jersey. The Quality Institute’s President and CEO, Linda Schwimmer, is a member of the Leapfrog Board of Directors.

As the Regional Leader, the Quality Institute’s main task is to encourage local hospitals to publicly report their progress via the Leapfrog Hospital Survey on the implementation of Leapfrog’s four recommended quality and safety practices or ‘leaps’:

  1. Implementation of computerized physician order entry (CPOE) systems;
  2. Staffing ICUs with intensivists;
  3. Referring patients to hospitals with the best results for treating certain high-risk conditions; and,
  4. Implementation of safe practices endorsed by the National Quality Forum;

Regional Leaders collaborate and communicate with hospitals, health plans, physicians, labor unions, consumer groups, and others in their local market to advance Leapfrog’s mission of increasing the transparency of hospital performance.  As New Jersey’s Regional Leader, the Quality Institute is responsible for coordinating such stakeholders to actively develop community-focused goals that align with Leapfrog’s quality improvement, transparency, and purchasing principles.
