According to HealthDay News, a new study found that following a Mediterranean diet can help prevent a certain type of brain damage – called brain infarcts – in older adults. Brain infarcts are areas of tissue that have died due to restricted or completely cut-off blood supply. Infarcts are actually considered strokes, but they are so small that they often go unnoticed.
Researchers led by Dr. Nikolaos Scarmeas used MRIs to gather data from 712 men and women with an average age of 80. They found that 238 of participants had at least one area of brain damage, but those who adhered to a strict Mediterranean diet showed a 36% reduced risk for brain damage.
