The Joint Commission has released a Sentinel Event Alert stating that both federal and state governments must escalate their efforts to identify causes and increase prevention of maternal death, reports Modern Healthcare. According to the CDC, every 100,000 live births result in 13.3 maternal deaths. The national target set in the Healthy People 2010 initiative is 3.3 maternal deaths per 100,000 live births.

The Joint Commission stated that hospitals need to follow specific protocols for treating pregnant women who have changes in vital signs, hemorrhage, or preeclampsia; and educate caregivers about conditions that could lead to pregnancy-related deaths.
